After a slow start to the Premier League and an early exit from the Champions League, Manchester United have come up with the goods at the right time and Ole’s men are three points clear at the top the table after their win over Burnley. This means Man United are top of the League so far into the season for the first time since 2012-13.
The Red Devils prepare for an all important trip away to defending champions Liverpool. If they come away from Anfield with all three points they would go six points clear at the top and would become title challengers in the true sense. It would be a crunch clash as Man United are unbeaten away from home this season and Liverpool are unbeaten at home in the league since April 2017. Though Man City have two games in hand and are slowly creeping up the table, they have their own problems upfront.
After a number of hits and misses in the transfer market, Man United have done considerably good business over the past few windows and have attracted players that have added massively to the squad. Solskjaer has managed to assemble a squad which looks like title contenders at least on paper. Bruno Fernandes who came in at the start of 2020 has turned out to be the signing of the season. No other player has more goal contributions in the league since his arrival. The signing of Edinson Cavani has filled the void of a proper number nine. The squad has great depth with replacements for all positions. Many players like Van de Beek and Alex Telles are waiting for their opportunities and they need to be on point when the time comes. Only then can the team be the at the top of the league come May.
The manager has shown great character and has come up with the goods when placed under immense pressure. Ole has managed to revive his squad and inspire them after a poor start to the season. Pochettino was linked with United since he faced the sack at Spurs and a number of players have been unhappy with their condition at the club. But the Norwegian has dealt with all the criticism in a silent way and led his team to the top of the league. After bottling up four cup semis, United fans would be hoping that they finally win some silverware under their treble winning hero. “We’re almost halfway through the season so it’s a little bit of an indication of where you’re at,” said Solskjaer at a recent interview.
Another important factor that could help United in their bid for their first title since 2012-13 is the struggles of their rivals. Liverpool have been struck down with injuries that have highly dented their chances. Klopp’s men have even hit a rough patch and are winless in their last three league fixtures. Man City are slowly creeping up the table but they have to win their remaining games to keep pace. After a good start Spurs have failed to keep pace. Everton and Leicester are quite unpredictable and lack the squad depth to mount a title challenge.
So if United can continue their good form through the second half of the season and Ole has his full squad at his disposal, this team can do well and could even edge the title. So can Ole’s men finally win the title and bring glory days back to the red half of Manchester?
